The Brook

By Mary Patterson

I sat beside the little brook
In the quiet of the day,
Listening to the peaceful sounds
The running water made.

I saw the many stones,
With their different sizes and shapes.
Their color added beauty to the water
And scenic landscape.

Now and then, a fish would dart
Between the little rocks.
Their bodies shimmered in the sunlight
As they swam from spot to spot.

Once in a while a bug would land
Upon the bubbling brook,
Or a leaf would float by,
On its journey to some shady nook.

I sat for quite a while,
Enjoying the serenity of the scene,
And realized it was
An integral part of nature's scheme.

For God with his infinite powers,
Shaped and made this great earth.
We need only to notice its treasures
And realize their worth.

Yes, I sat beside the little brook
On a bright, sunny day,
And enjoyed its glimmering waters,
As it traveled on its way.
